A Message from Robert L. Alderman, Esq.

Welcome to my Web Site!

I want to take this opportunity to introduce my continuing education program to you.

My biography, which discusses my professional credentials, academic qualifications, and publications, is listed separately on my web site. I encourage you to read it.

This message is to explain my philosophy of education and how it may relate to your goals for continuing education.

My entire program is based on the legal, business and financial aspects of professional practice for architects and interior designers. All of my courses have prepared solely by me and are based on my own written materials.

I began my career by practicing law in New York City and worked for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as Trial Counsel. After three years, I established my own private practice, specializing in corporate and commercial law. Quite early in my practice, I acquired a furniture manufacturer, a group of architects and a group of interior designers as clients. They all had been represented by different legal counsel who were very competent professionals but had no knowledge of their business or specific legal concerns.

Since one of my strengths is writing, I started reinventing professional service contracts for architects and interior designers. I tailored each contract to fit the project’s needs and requirements. My goals were to protect architects and interior designers from liability and to help them earn more money. On many occasions, I personally negotiated their fees directly with their clients.

In the course of representing a number of high profile architects and interior designers, I was hired by several magazines, including Interior Design Magazine, to write about the legal and financial issues relating to the business of architecture and interior design. My columns were very successful and, as a result, I wrote two books on these subjects that have been widely published.

Teaching became a natural extension of my publications, and I have spoken to many professional organizations in this field over the years.

As time progressed, the concept of continuing education became a growing industry in Florida and in many other states for licensed professionals. As an attorney, I have my own continuing education requirements to fulfill in Florida and New York where I am a member of the bar.

It occurred to me that all my information was a perfect fit for continuing education for architects and interior designers, so in 1994, I began writing courses.

Over the years, these courses have evolved into their present format. Hopefully, today, they are more user friendly than ever!

All my courses are based on real life experiences! All the information has been gathered while I have represented architects and interior designers over the years. It is not hypothetical. It is not theoretical. And I have found that the same issues crop up, again and again!

Of course, not all of these cases or discussions will relate to your practice, specifically. If you are a solo practitioner or work in a large firm or are employed in a related field, your needs vary. My work is based upon my own professional experiences which may differ greatly from yours.

Nonetheless, the principals are universal! I am a former faculty member at Florida International University in the College of Architecture, teaching students of architecture and interior design courses in professional office practice and research methods. I only use my own materials for professional office practice, which are all developed from my continuing education courses. This includes my latest text book, “How to Prosper as an Interior Designer,” published by John Wiley & Sons.

My students have reacted very positively because they realize that the courses prepare them for the future. My continuing education students, licensed architects and interior designers, have always given my courses excellent evaluations and high ratings.

I hope you take at least one of my courses. In my opinion, the more courses that you take, the more that you will benefit from them. My audiocassette course, “Legal and Financial Issues,” is an overall survey course. The other courses are all contained in workbooks. The courses for architects have short essays. For interior designers, all courses have been rewritten and contain objective questions. All of my courses are “user friendly.”

I will look forward to having you as my student and hearing your comments.

Please enjoy the courses. Thank you.
